Ultrafine-grained magnesium alloy AZ31 prepared by hot extrusion (EX) and subsequent equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was annealed isochronally and the microstructure stability was investigated. The evolution of mechanical properties, microstructure and dislocation density were studied by microhardness measurements, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). Mechanism of grain growth was investigated using general equation for grain growth and Arrhenius equation. Activation energies for grain growth in various temperature ranges were calculated.
