Assessment of the remaining life of high temperature service exposed components is necessary for effective utilization of these expensive items beyond the design life. Knowledge of residual life also allows time for replacement of the components and avoids accident of such type of components used at high temperature. Amongst the various methods used to predict the remaining service life of a component, metallographic technique is an important one since this method can be considered as non-destructive, very small sample is needed and this method can directly measures the damage micro mechanism. The present paper reviews the micro-structural changes of ferritic steels due to long term service exposure and describes the remaining life of service exposed components used in thermal power plant.
